Academic calendar

Semester I: 1st week of September – end of December
Semester II: 1st week of January – end of April

Orientation commences generally the last week of August for semester I and the 1st week of January for semester II.

Exams take place the 2nd and 3rd week of December for semester I and the 2nd and 3rd week of April for semester II.

Requirements

GPA (Average Grade)

There is no GPA requirement for this destination.

English Language Requirement

Graduate (master) students need proof of proficiency:

A grade of 7 or higher in final year English VWO or
A degree from a programme where the language of instruction is English.

Please check the most recent language requirements on the website of the host university.

Undergraduate (bachelor) students will receive a letter stating their English proficiency from the International Office.

Areas of study open to exchange students

All except for:

  • Medicine
  • Dentistry
  • Pharmacy (unless within the Pharmacy exchange program)
  • Criminology
  • Arts and Design
  • the course called BUS 201 is not open to exchange students
  • some Business courses, mostly Accounting courses
  • Any courses or programs described in Bear Tracks as being closed to exchange students
  • Faculty of Extension courses (i.e. with course code starting with EX)
  • Unless your exchange is specifically to the University of Alberta's Augustana Campus, you should not plan to take courses there (i.e. avoid courses with course codes starting with AU)

Undergraduate students cannot take graduate-level courses but grad students may be able to take undergraduate-level courses.

Undergraduate students must take all or a majority of their courses in the same faculty

Housing assistance

On-campus housing is guaranteed for exchange students at UAlberta in semester I. There is no housing guarantee for semester II, but generally all exchange students can be placed.
