University and University of applied sciences consider possible sanctions USC

The Executive Boards of Utrecht University and University of Applied Sciences Utrecht are considering possible sanctions against the Utrechtsch Studenten Corps (USC). Late last week it became clear that members of the USC made and distributed a list in which female students were "reviewed" sexually.

"We take this very highly," says rector magnificus Henk Kummeling on behalf of the Executive Board of Utrecht University and on behalf of Wilma Scholte op Reimer, president of the Executive Board of University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. "We have had a firm and very clear conversation with the USC board and are now considering our next steps." What possible sanctions will be imposed on USC will be announced later this week.

The list and its distribution have profound implications for the approximately 30 students involved, some of whom are studying at the university and some at the university of applied sciences. Good care for these students is now the main priority. We want to be helpful where possible. If desired, Utrecht University offers them support through their student advisors, who act as the first point of contact and can refer them to counseling if necessary.

Social safety is an important theme that requires constant attention. Utrecht University aims to provide a pleasant and safe study and working environment for all students and staff. Inappropriate behavior - as we see now from members of USC - leads to unsafe situations for fellow students. "That is unacceptable," says Henk Kummeling.
