The Descartes College offers interdisciplinary honours courses for Bachelor’s students. These courses differ from other honours courses due to their broad nature, covering various fields. The Descartes courses enable you to see how your own discipline relates to others. You will discuss topics with fellow students and teachers from other specialisations. Each course reflects upon the academic disciplines from a different perspective. You can take the honours courses in your second and third year of your Bachelor’s degree. The language of the courses is Dutch.
Signing up and the selection process
Students who are motivated and have a broad interest in different topics can sign up for selection for the Descartes College at the end of the first year of their Bachelor’s programme. Are you already an honours student? In that case you do not need to take part in the selection process and you can sign up directly (each semester) for one or more courses of the Descartes College.
Testimonials from students
“The lecturers touch upon interesting topics which usually deviate completely from topics of concern during my own study programme.”
Rosita Kiewik - Communication- and Information Science
“The interdisciplinary character of the courses creates a whole different perspective on problems and concepts. Besides, the courses make you rethink the science of today: is the Stapel affair not a result of the publication pressure at universities? Has the government a task to intervene with science?"
Guus Wieman – History
“Reflecting on science in a playful way supported by eloquent lecturers that give strong presentations and facilitate good discussions.”
Gerben van der Werf – Chemistry
