Apply for the Mixed Classroom 2022-2023

Students can apply now for the annual Mixed Classroom course, organised by the Urban Futures Studio, an exciting new form of education for policymakers, artists, activists and students. The aim of this course is to give participants an understanding of the techniques developed for knowing and anticipating the future in view of the planetary crisis of the 21st century.

Participation in this course offers students the possibility to reflect on possible and desirable futures and gain hands-on experience in connecting ideas to action in collaboration with policymakers and citizens, on topics that are both scientifically innovative and societally urgent. The Mixed Classroom was awarded the ‘Hogeronderwijspremie’ in 2021, a new education prize that is the counterpart of the Spinozapremie for research.

The good life in a post-fossil world

During the course, participants will study and reflect on existing and new practices like scenario planning, back casting, design thinking and science fiction. Students will create an online exhibition around this year's theme: The good life in a post-fossil world. The effective and worldwide utilization of fossil fuels has been absolutely essential in reaching the life standards we are so accustomed to today. Simultaneously, the climate crisis and many interconnected societal challenges cannot be seen apart from our deep dependency on fossil fuels. In this year’s Mixed Classroom we embark on an imaginative exploration of the question: Can transitioning out of our deep dependency on fossil fuel open a door to reimagining what it means to live a good life?
