ELAN: Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz
Karl-Franszens-Universität Graz, or the University of Graz, is a destination within the European Liberal Arts Network (ELAN) for University College Utrecht students, located in Graz, Austria. The exchange will take place at The Institute of Philosophy of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities
We recommend going in Spring, since that semester aligns better with the UCU academic year.
|Number of places available|

Fall (winter) Semester: Early October – end of January
|Language of instruction|
This destination has a language of instruction other than English. This means that you need to have at least a language proficiency level of CEFR B2 German. You need to complete German Language and Culture II (UCHUMGER21) or get an exemption from the UCU Language & Culture coordinator, and it is your own responsibility to achieve at least B2 German. This language requirement is partly for your own protection, so you can take courses at the same level as you do at UCU, and partly because we believe it allows you to have an experience abroad that is more immersive, enriching and culturally valuable to you.
At the University of Graz, courses are predominantly taught in German, and a few are available in English.
Fall semester: June 1
An overview of courses taught at Graz can be found here, with a guide here . Your academic advisor at Graz will guide you in your course choice. Lab courses and translation courses are not available for exchange students.
The same as UCU, ECTS.
The University of Graz works with the following grading system:
Exchange students can apply for housing either via the housing office of the Austrian Exchange Service (OeAD) or at the different dorms directly. For deadlines of housing applications at the individual dorms, please check the respective websites.
For costs about housing, see above. The university has student restaurants or “Mensae” around campus, and the town has a number of cafés and restaurants with prices comparable to those in Utrecht.Click here for a general overview of living costs in Austria,
Welcome Events are mandatory and include sessions about orientation / registration / course system. These will be held around the first week of the semester.
The university has a campus with the faculty buildings near the city center. Some 30,000 students are enrolled at the university. Student housing is spread throughout the city (see above).
The university is located close to the old center of Graz, a city in south-eastern Austria on the edge of the Alps. The city has some 300,000 inhabitants, of which 60,000 are students. The city has many historic cites and museums, and its city center is a UNESCO heritage cite. Go here for tourist information.
The University of Graz is a new destination, and therefore we have not received feedback from our students yet. Be the first UCU student to explore Graz!
