Methods in the Humanities

The method courses - some mandatory, some elective - provide you with the essential methodological skills for your Humanities study. 

  • For all Humanities majors, the level 1 course UCACCMET13 Introduction to Rhetoric and Informal Logic is mandatory.
  • At level 2, 7.5 credits are required. See the options below.

Which course for which field?
There are no strict methodology prerequisites for any of the HUM disciplines. Some level 3 course and thesis outlines may have a recommendation though. Your tutor, teachers, and fellows can advise. Recommendations:

UCACCMET22 Applied Multivariate Statistics, UCACCSTA21 Biostatistics

for research involving statistics (e.g. LIN, HIS)

UCACCMET24 Qualitative Inquiry in Everyday Life

for ethnographic work (e.g. CHI, HAR, LIN, MES, PES)

UCACCMET25 Critical Discourse Analysis + 2,5 EC (UCACCMET2D/2M/2L)

for analysis of power embedded in discourse (all fields, esp LIT, HIS, MES, PES, REL)
Possible until Spring 2026, after which the 2.5 ec modules are no longer available. Becomes UCACCMET27 in 2027.

UCACCMET26 Formal Logic

for understanding language, reasoning and information flow using tools from logic (all fields, esp LIN, PHI)

UCACCMET27 Critical Discourse Analysis and Positionality (in 2027)

for analysis of power embedded in discourse (all fields, esp LIT, HIS, MES, PES, REL)

UCACCMET2J Making Sense of Data + 2,5 EC (UCACCMET2D, 2M, 2L)

for data analysis (e.g. LIN, HIS, MES). 
Possible until Spring 2026, after which the 2.5 ec modules are no longer available.

UCACCWRI21 Creative Writing

for training good writing (e.g. LIT, HAR, MES, PES, PHI)
