The university is located in Valparaiso, Indiana, a town of 30,000 inhabitants. It is located about 40 km outside of the larger city of Gary, Indiana, and 80 km outside of Chicago.
It has a continental climate: winters are much colder than in Utrecht, while summers are slightly warmer.

As with most American universities, there are dozens of student organizations which engage in all sorts of activities, as well as sports facilities. As Valparaiso is a Lutheran university, there are particularly large spiritual facilities.
