Tulane University (Orleans)

Tulane University is an exchange destination for Utrecht University School of LAW students.

Studying law in the United States is very different from studying law in many other countries. In various countries, students begin their law studies immediately following graduation from high school or secondary school; most universities in other countries require only a high school diploma or the equivalent in that country to admit students to their law faculties. In the US, however, law is a professional academic field, the equivalent of a graduate degree in other parts of the world.

Law schools in the US are part of public or private universities that grant Juris Doctor (J.D.) degrees. The Juris Doctor program generally lasts three years for full-time students and four years for part-time students. The first year of law school is generally considered to be the most difficult because of the core classes, exams, and the Socrates method. The Socrates method is a method used in most law school classes in which the professor cold calls on students to state a case or respond to a case-based question. This intimidates many students, particularly international students, who might be afraid to speak up in class, but most international students do just fine.

NOTE: The primary difference between the state of Louisiana and other states is that Louisiana is a civil law state, whereas all other states in the US are common law states. As a result, it's one of only a few US law schools that offers extensive course offerings in both civil and common law

Requirements

All Tulane Law School courses are taught in English. Students should be studying law and fluent in English, both oral and written. Tulane Law School requires the TOEFL unless otherwise waived (for UU students with a VWO highschool diploma indeed waived). The minimum score is 90 on the internet based exam, 233 on the computer-based exam, and 577 on the paper-and-pencil based exam. Students may also take the IELTS, receiving a band score of 7.

Areas of study open for exchange students

Exchange students can take any course offered by the Law School, subject to the prerequisites for any given course, with the exception of certain clinical and skills-related courses. Exchange students take classes with JD and LLM students. Exchange students are allowed to take one non-law related class. Exchange students are allowed to take one non-law related class.

LL.M. Grad Study: This new program allows any student attending Tulane Law School as part of an exchange program, to return to Tulane Law School, within two academic years, and receive advance standing credit against an LLM degree for all law school classes he or she has taken with us.

Exchange students will be graded on the normal U.S. grading scale (A-F).

Housing

Temporary on-campus housing is available during the July orientation session. After the orientation is over, students must find permanent off-campus housing on their own for the academic term. The Office of International Legal Programs is available to answer questions regarding housing and offer advice to students looking for housing.

Unfortunately, due to the scarcity of on-campus housing, only off-campus housing is available. You have the opportunity to search for off-campus apartments through http://tulane.ochgateway.com/ the Housing and Residence Life Office’s web-based apartment finder.
You should plan on setting up temporary accommodations for the first few nights as you look for an apartment. Housing possibilities may also be researched by checking housing advertisements on the Law School intranet site (log in information will be provided to students before arrival) and on student bulletin boards. The following housing resources can also be used to acquire temporary housing accommodations, as helpful guides to apartments available in the area and an idea of price ranges, and to set up appointments for when you arrive:
