Tulane University (Orleans)
Tulane University is an exchange destination for Utrecht University School of LAW students.
Studying law in the United States is very different from studying law in many other countries. In various countries, students begin their law studies immediately following graduation from high school or secondary school; most universities in other countries require only a high school diploma or the equivalent in that country to admit students to their law faculties. In the US, however, law is a professional academic field, the equivalent of a graduate degree in other parts of the world.
Law schools in the US are part of public or private universities that grant Juris Doctor (J.D.) degrees. The Juris Doctor program generally lasts three years for full-time students and four years for part-time students. The first year of law school is generally considered to be the most difficult because of the core classes, exams, and the Socrates method. The Socrates method is a method used in most law school classes in which the professor cold calls on students to state a case or respond to a case-based question. This intimidates many students, particularly international students, who might be afraid to speak up in class, but most international students do just fine.
Student experiences | Read the student experiences here NOTE: The primary difference between the state of Louisiana and other states is that Louisiana is a civil law state, whereas all other states in the US are common law states. As a result, it's one of only a few US law schools that offers extensive course offerings in both civil and common law |

Grad Study: This new program allows any student attending Tulane Law School as part of an exchange program, to return to Tulane Law School, within two academic years, and receive advance standing credit against an LLM degree for all law school classes he or she has taken with us. Exchange students will be graded on the normal U.S. grading scale (A-F). |
Housing | Temporary on-campus housing is available during the July orientation session. After the orientation is over, students must find permanent off-campus housing on their own for the academic term. The Office of International Legal Programs is available to answer questions regarding housing and offer advice to students looking for housing. Unfortunately, due to the scarcity of on-campus housing, only off-campus housing is available. You have the opportunity to search for off-campus apartments through http://tulane.ochgateway.com/ the Housing and Residence Life Office’s web-based apartment finder. We recommend that properties not be rented sight unseen. |
