Course information

Department of Culture and Aesthetics 

Academic calendar

Semester I: approximately late August – mid-January
Semester II: approximately mid-January – early June

Requirements

Language requirement: a minimum language level of B2 (CEFR) in English is required.

Areas of study open to exchange students

Bachelor level:

  • Languages (NVT-stage)

The NVT-internship is primarily open for students from the BA Dutch, or students from the BA Language and Culture Studies, with a focus on Dutch, Linguistics and/or Second Language Acquisition. For additional information, please contact Emmeline Besamusca: E.N.Besamusca@uu.nl

Bachelor and Master level:

  • Media, Communication, Film

Students will take courses at the 'Department of Media Studies'. Subjects that are taught at this department are Media, Cinema, and Fashion Studies. In Spring semester students from several bachelor majors like Cultural studies, History, Literature or similar fields within the Humanities can take courses in Cinema Studies which is a historical-philosophical subject. There are three courses (3x15 ECTS) without prerequisites offered – see Spring Course Listings  

For Autumn semester almost all English courses taught at the Department are at an advanced level for master's students. Senior bachelor students, Media and Communication only, in their last year of studies (120 ECTS minimum) in one of these subject areas/closely related areas, may participate in graduate courses after approval on a case-by-case basis.

There are no restrictions for Utrecht students to take courses from other departments within the Faculty of Humanities as long as eligibility requirements are fulfilled.

  • Art History, History Comparative Literature, Musicology, Performing Arts

Students have to take at least one course at the 'Department of Culture and Aesthetics'. Subjects that are taught at this department are History of Art, Literature, Music and Musicology, Performing Arts, and History of Ideas. Students are allowed to take all of their other courses at other departments within the university. However, second level courses require a bachelor degree; note the special eligibility requirements for each course.
