Cultural Anthropology
Cultural anthropology studies humanity in its diversity. Cultural anthropologists examine differences and connections between and within societies. Anthropology teaches you to question what is familiar and to make the familiar strange. You learn to understand what drives others, even if their behavior may differ from your own, be this in an Indigenous community in the Amazon region or in a European multinational located at the ‘Zuid-As’ in Amsterdam.
Cultural anthropologists conduct research by being with people—by participating, observing, and engaging in conversations. To understand people, a cultural anthropologist immerses themselves in their world.
The minor Cultural Anthropology offers an introduction into key themes, approaches, and methodologies of anthropology and allows for exploration on some of the important areas of anthropological inquiry. The minor entails at least an introductory part and allows for choice in important areas of anthropological inquiry, such as gender, violence, religion, racialization, sustainability, death, and the more-than-human. Within these courses students practice their anthropological research skills in small projects.
Related Master's programmes
The minor forms an excellent preparation for the Master’s degree programmes Cultural Anthropology: Sustainable Citizenship and the research master Cultural Anthropology: Sociocultural Transformation). Note that for the research master additional entry requirements apply.
