SUMMA symposium June 21, 2022: registration
On behalf of the Selective Utrecht Medical Master (SUMMA) Symposium Committee, I cordially invite you to visit our upcoming symposium about “Technological advances in healthcare; how far can we go and how far should we go?” on Tuesday June 21, 2022. This symposium will be hosted by the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU), the Netherlands, and will be held in English. Please find attached to this email the save the date poster and at the end of the email our registration form.
During this symposium we aim for an opportunity for medical students, researchers, and medical specialists to explore and discuss new developments in the (academic) medical field.
This year’s topic concerns advancements in research and treatment regarding technology. We aim to provide insights in the current technological possibilities in health care, but also want to raise awareness on the ethical confines.
About the symposium
You are welcome from 8:30 onwards and the program will be from 9:00 till 17:00.
We will start and end the day with ethical perspectives provided by dr. Karin Jongsma (i.a. member of the Institutional Research Board of UMCU and member of the METC Utrecht) and dr. Philip Nickel (philosophical researcher in the domain of biomedical ethics at TU Eindhoven and i.a. member of the METC of Máxima MC). Several new technological advances in the hospital will be highlighted by dr. Frank Halfwerk (i.a. principal investigator of cardiac surgery innovations at University of Twente), prof. dr. Jelle Ruurda (i.a. founder and chair of the Dutch Robotic Surgery working group and full professor of the department of surgical oncology of UMCU), ir. Joëll Magré (biomedical engineer at the 3D lab of UMCU) and dr. Harold de Valk (internist-endocrinologist at UMCU who has performed a lot of research on technology and diabetes). Insides on technology in healthcare at the molecular and cellular level will be provided by several researchers including prof. dr. Madelon Maurice (Professor of Molecular Cell Biology at UMCU with her own research lab focusing on stem cell and cancer cell biology to understand patient-specific disease mechanisms to develop improved cancer-targeting strategies), dr. Valeria Orlova (Assistant Professor at the Department of Anatomy and Embryology, Leiden University Medical Center with her own research lab focusing on pluripotent stem cells for vascular differentiation and disease modeling), dr. Talya Dayton (postdoc at Hubrecht Institute at the research group of prof. dr. Hans Clevers who focuses on organoids). On the other hand, MSc Emilie Klaver (technical physician/researcher at Medisch Spectrum Twente and PhD candidate at Donders institute, Radboud University Nijmegen) will provide insights in new technological advances which can be used outside the hospital as well. Last, but definitely not least, we will cross some boundaries by looking outside The Netherlands, or even Europe as well, together with dr. Peter Reemst (a very experienced all-round surgeon who started his career as tropical doctor in rural Kenya) and BSc Marjelle Scheffers (SUMMA student with a background in biomedical engineering at the University of Delaware who developed a physical prototype of a bamboo wheelchair at Ghana Bamboo Bikes initiative).
The symposium will include plenary sessions, parallel sessions, and a panel discussion. You can register for these parallel sessions in a later form.
During the day, we will provide several drinks and food for you. Besides a cup of coffee or tea, you will get a bottle of water and some snacks during the day. The lunch break will be from 12:45 to 14:00 and includes a banquet of diverse (vegetarian) sandwiches.
