Semester I: 1st week of April –  1st week of August

Semester II: late September /beginning October – Mid February

Requirements

General Exchange Students who take courses are expected to be proficient in Japanese, equivalent to pass the highest level of Japanese Language Proficiency Test. KUINEP students must be proficient in English so as to catch up with lectures.

Areas of study open to exchange students

All areas except medical field.

Courses at Master’s level

All areas except medical field.

Language of instruction

With the exception of English-taught degree courses, classes are generally conducted in Japanese unless specified otherwise. Those who wish to enroll in an undergraduate program or a master's program must, therefore, have sufficient proficiency in Japanese upon entering the university.

Housing assistance

One on-campus and four off-campus International Houses of Kyoto University, and other dormitories are offered for international students. All exchange students are entitled to live in one of them as long as there are enough dormitory rooms available. Kyoto University lodging facilities can be found here.

Estimated living costs per month

Although the cost of living varies depending on factors such as housing expenditure and food budget, the average living expenses for international students are between ¥66,000 (US$579) and ¥82,000 (US$719) per month.

Normal study load per term

in courses: Generally each course has one lecture of 90 minutes in each week. Taking 6 such courses in each semester is recommended.

Grading system: A=100-80, B=79-70, C=69-60, Failed=59-0.

Minimum pass is: 60/100
