Requirements

HKU has strict English language requirements. The following applies to UU students except for students who wish to study at the HKU Faculty of Law:

1)      For those who are enrolled in fully-English-taught programmes, please a statement confirming this is sufficient and can be provided by the exchange coordinator at the University wide exchange office

2)      For those who attained VWO English score 8 or above, they can submit the VWO diploma copy with a highlight/remark of the score of the English language course.

3)      For those who could not provide any of the above of will be studying LAW courses, they should provide IELTS/TOEFL/other acceptable test results after being selected for the exchange.

 

Areas of study open to exchange students

All, except for courses offered by the following Faculties/programmes:

  • Faculty of Architecture
  • Faculty of Dentistry
  • Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine
  • BSc (Exercise and Health) Programme
  • Most final year project courses provided by all faculties

Law – Generally, the standards for admission for exchange and visiting students are at least upper second-class honours (2:1) results (which converts to approximately a CGPA of 3.33). 

Business & Economics – Courses offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE) are highly competitive.

Students who are in their final year in particular, should note that course enrollment is NOT guaranteed.
Students who apply to FBE should have a grade level of B average / CGPA 3.0 / Satisfactory level.

Courses at Master’s level

Not in general, but you can inquire with the exchange officer at HKU.

Language of instruction

All courses, except those offered by the School of Chinese, are taught in English.

Housing assistance

Hall accommodation is available but NOT guaranteed. Most of the rooms are double rooms, expect to pay around 3000 HK$ per month. For those residents whose halls do not provide compulsory meal plans, they can have meals on campus.

University-administered accommodation:
Lodging fees for university undergraduate halls range from approximately HK$10,300 to HK$20,000 per academic year. A few halls have compulsory meal charges ranging from HK$8,000 to HK$8,880 per year but the figures do NOT cover all meals.

Private housing:
Rental in the private market is expensive. The rent for a room in a flat nearby may cost at least HK$4,000 per month.

Meals:
Around HK$25,200 per year (3 meals a day in the campus restaurants)

Local transportation:
HK$9,800 per year on average

Academic expenses:
HK$11,000 per year on average, but costs vary with different courses

Credits
  • 30 credits per semester
  • 6 credits per course (in general)
  • Students are required to take a minimum of 24 credits to a maximum of 36 credits in each semester subject to approval of Dean/Head of Department

Grading system: Letters (A to F)
Minimum pass: D

Number of places available

8 places per year. Selection was necessary in the past few years.
