Areas of study open to exchange students

Students have to take at least 60 percent of their courses at the 'Institute of History'. If students would like to take other courses within the university covered, they need to contact the Institute first. Courses at the Faculty of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine are restricted. 

Courses at Master’s level


Language of instruction

German or English (except language departments). Students should have sufficient proficiency of German and/or English to be able to follow lectures and write exams. The language of instruction is mentioned in the course catalogue. Most classes in English are at Master level.

A German language course for exchange students is offered in the two weeks previous to the semester (at least level A2 CEFR required). Further German courses are offered during the semester on various levels.

Exchange students are allowed to do a maximum of 15 hours work per week. Non-EU students are not allowed to work during the first 6 months of residence in Switzerland.

1 place per year. 

Grant information

Funding through Swiss-European Mobility Programme rather than through Erasmus+.

As a SEMP (Erasmus) incoming student, you will receive a mobility grant from the Swiss government. This ranges between CHF 360-420 a month depending on your country of origin. Your online application for a SEMP (Erasmus) stay at the University of Bern is also an automatic application for the grant.
