Requirements

Courses at UZH are mainly held in German. Courses in English are offered in several fields of study. We recommend a minimum level of B2 in the language of instruction. 

Students who intend to take courses in German or English Literature and Linguistics, and who are non-native speakers of the respective language, are expected to have a standard of proficiency at the level of C1 of the CEFR in the respective language. 

In philology courses the language of instruction is often the language of the region studied.

  • Cross-faculty course booking is allowed; students should attend most courses in their major - you can take up to a maximum of 1/3 of your courses in another department.
  • Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences: no cross-level booking.
  • English Department (English Language and Literature): Students who are not enrolled in English Language and Literature at their home university can only take lectures offered by the English Department.

Funding through the Swiss-European Mobility Programme (SEMP) rather than Erasmus+.
Your application for an exchange in the frame of the Swiss-European Mobility Programme is also an application for a grant financed by the Swiss Confederation. However, your acceptance as an exchange student at UZH is no guarantee that you will receive such a grant.
