Research internship

As a non-EER student you might need an Entry visa/residence permit to be able to do research at our faculty. If an Entry visa/residence permit is required we will help you with this process. You do not need to contact the Dutch Immigration Services (IND) yourself. As a student you will have to submit your application and documents to Utrecht University and we will send your application to the IND after checking if everything is in order and adding our own documents.

For each Entry visa/residence permit requested the student needs to pay a fee. The payment of the fees is an essential part of visa and residence permit applications, and has to be concluded before the deadline. Without the payment, we cannot submit your application to the IND. Please note the visa/residence permit fee is non refundable, once the application has been submitted to the IND. More information can be found here.

As a research student you are not bound to the start of semesters or courses. This means that the deadlines for visa as mentioned do not apply. Please make sure you have at least 4 months from start to finish. And always get contact with the International Office of Veterinary Medicine via email; internationaloffice.vet@uu.nl we will help you and explain the steps that need to be taken.

At Utrecht University we expect our research students to be proficient in English.  

Are you an Erasmus+ student? You may hand in a signed 'language proficiency form'. This form will be send to you together with the application instructions. Your home university International Coordinator could sign the form or refer you to someone who is authorized to do so.

The following test scores indicate the level of English that is required:

Bachelor level:

• IELTS : Academic Module. Minimum score: 6.5 overall band, 5.5 for writing. IELTS is the test preferred by Utrecht University.
• TOEFL: Internet based. Minimum score: 83. Institutional scores are not accepted. The TOEFL institution code for Utrecht University is 9062.
• Cambridge Certificates: Advanced English or Proficiency in English, minimum score C.
• CERF: minimum level B2.

Master level:

• IELTS, Academic Module. Minimum score: 6.5 overall band, at least 6 for writing.
• TOEFL, Internet based. Minimum score: 93, institutional scores are not accepted (the TOEFL institution code for Utrecht University is 9062).
• Cambridge Certificates
  • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English, at least a B grade.
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, at least a C grade.
• CERF: minimum level C1.

Chinese students have to take the IELTS or TOEFL test due to visa requirements (Bachelor & Master).

Exemptions:

• If you have obtained a secondary school diploma and/or a BA degree in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Malta, New Zealand, Singapore, UK, USA, or South Africa
• When you are a citizen of Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, UK, USA, or South Africa
• In case you have obtained an IB or EB diploma (English-taught programmes)
