Course levels

Course codes at Valparaiso University have courses with three digits. The codes indicate the following:

  • Code 100-199: introductory courses, intended for Freshmen and Sophomores.
  • Code 200-299: courses with only one prerequisite, mainly intended for Sophomores.
  • Code 300-399: advanced undergraduate courses, intended or Juniors and Seniors. 
  • Code 400-499: advanced undergraduate course, intended for seniors.
Credit system

Students are required to take at least 12 credits per semester to meet the UCU full course load of 30 ECTS.

Grade system

Valparaiso University uses an A-F grading scale, similar to UCU.

Housing

Orientation

The Fall semester has a 3-day welcoming program and the Spring welcoming has a 2-day orientation program. Students are also required to participate in FOCUS, the New Student Orientation, which assists new students in their transition to life at Valpo. Find out more here

Situation

The university is located in Valparaiso, Indiana, a town of 30,000 inhabitants. It is located about 40 km outside of the larger city of Gary, Indiana, and 80 km outside of Chicago. 

It has a continental climate: winters are much colder than in Utrecht, while summers are slightly warmer. 

Student life

Valparaiso University has about 3,500 students. 

As with most American universities, there are dozens of student organizations which engage in all sorts of activities, as well as sports facilities. As Valparaiso is a Lutheran university, there are particularly large spiritual facilities
