Course levels and units

The course catalogue indicates which study years a course is intended for, as well as any prerequisites required.  

Credit system

UCF uses ECTS. A course is usually 6 credits, meaning you need to take 5. 

Housing

There is no on-campus housing as UCF. Finding housing in Freiburg can be difficult so it is important to start looking early. There is a Facebook group for prospective UCF students looking for housing. Read more here. You can also apply for the Service Package for International Students, which provides a dormitory room, as well as optional health insurance and other services for €2,200-2,800 per semester. Also see the university student page for more information. 

Costs

The university estimates that living costs in Freiburg (including housing and insurance) should cost around €750 per month. In general expenses are similar to Utrecht. 

Orientation

There is an orientation week before classes start in the Fall semester only. This is comparable to UCU’s introweek. Find out more here

Situation

UCF is located in Freiburg im Breisgau, a city of some 250,000 inhabitants of which 25,000 are students. The city has a historic center. It is located near the French and Swiss borders in the region known as the Black Forest, and near the Alps. The climate in Freiburg is similar to Utrecht, but Summer is warmer. Find out more here

Student life

The college is located on an academic (non-residential) campus in the old center of Freiburg and hosts about 300 students, 25% of which are non-German. The Albert-Ludwig University of Freiburg which it is a part of has some 25,000 students in total. Its Studierendenwerk offers many services such as psychological and social counseling. UCF has a Students Council which represents the students of the college and organizes committees and events for students. The college itself also organizes extracurricular courses about e.g. robotics, beer and wine, and a moot court.
