Thesis

You send an email to the relevant Fellow, indicating a potential thesis topic and, if you want to, a preference for a specific supervisor (overview of academic disciplines and Fellow contact information).

The Fellow advises you on steps to take (e.g., to find a supervisor) 

Enrolment for the regular research thesis (15 ECTS) is done through course label UCTHS150 in the pre-enrolment module. The same for the 7,5 ECTS Honours/double major thesis [UCTHS075]. 

Keep in mind that when you are not going to complete your thesis during one semester (Fall-Spring thesis or Spring-Summer thesis), you might need to submit a “Non-standard UCU credit load” via Osiris Case to be able to be enrolled for the thesis and three courses (15 + 22,5 = 37,5 ECTS).

The Fellow sees to it that all thesis writers are matched with a supervisor and that non-UCU supervisors are informed of UCU procedures and grading criteria.

You set up a meeting with the supervisor as soon as you have one.

You complete an online form to register for the thesis, including a brief research proposal, which is then sent to your supervisor and fellow to approve.

Following your thesis enrolment under 2. you will receive an email with the link to the form two weeks prior to the deadline

The supervisor and fellow approve the proposal or advise you on necessary changes. Once your proposal is approved, the Registrar’s Office will register your thesis enrolment to the correct thesis track.

The Fellow makes sure that second readers are found and informed about UCU procedures and grading criteria before the hand-in deadline.

You submit the final version of your thesis via Osiris Case and send it by email to your supervisor and your second reader.

Lab Work: For SCIENCE theses that include lab work a pre-determined date no later than 12 August (Spring/Summer thesis) or 15 January (Fall thesis).

Timeline change request: If you would like to change your thesis from Spring to Spring & Summer or vice versa, discuss this with your supervisor. If they agree, please request a change of thesis timeline at least one month before your current deadline via Osiris Case: "UCU thesis deadline adjustment request". You will be asked to upload evidence that you have agreed this with your supervisor.

Extension request: In agreement with your supervisor you can request an extension of your current thesis deadline because of extenuating circumstances. Submit a UCU thesis deadline adjustment request in Osiris Case for this. A deadline adjustment request must be submitted at least one week before the submission deadline. Please note that late or non-submission of your thesis may have grading consequences

You will receive a notification from Osiris that your thesis is graded. The Fellow has processed the plagiarism check and assessment sheets of supervisor and second reader and uploaded those in Osiris.

Extension request: In agreement with your supervisor you can request an extension of your current thesis deadline because of extenuating circumstances. Submit a UCU thesis deadline adjustment request in Osiris Case for this. A deadline adjustment request must be submitted at least one week before the submission deadline. Please note that late or non-submission of your thesis may have grading consequences. 

An approved extension may delay your graduation, as it means your grade will be entered later.
