Graduation

Graduation follows a set procedure. Here you can read exactly which steps you need to take. You can also find out how to apply for postponement or apply for a declaration of graduation.

Step 1: Check whether you meet the graduation requirements

You must be enrolled at Utrecht University and comply with the requirements set forth in the Education and Examination Regulations. If your admission decision includes conditions (such as completing course deficiencies or obtaining a Master’s or doctoral degree), you must also meet these requirements.

Step 2: Approval of the Board of Examiners

The Board of Examiners reviews the status of students who have met all the programme’s examination requirements at the middle and end of each month and then sets the examination date. You will then receive a graduation email.

Step 3: Receive your diploma

As proof of graduation, you will receive a diploma as well as an International Diploma Supplement (IDS), which contains your courses, grades and average grade. In order to provide insight into your grades for foreign universities, we provide so-called Grading Tables. You can either receive your diploma and IDS during a graduation ceremony or (let someone) pick up your diploma.

Graduation ceremony

  • Graduation date: October 7, 2026
  • Location: University Hall
  • Time: 9:00 AM3:00 PM
  • Deadline examination date: August 31, 2026

What do I need to arrange after graduating?

Once you have received your examination date, you will need to arrange the following:

How to apply for postponement

Do you want to apply for postponement of graduation? Submit a written request to the Board of Examiners (examencommissie.gst@uu.nl) within two weeks after you have received your graduation e-mail, accompanied by the necessary documentation. When submitting your request, you must indicate when you wish to obtain your diploma.

Declaration of graduation

Approximately 4 weeks after your examination date, you can request a proof of graduation from the DUO diploma register that you have obtained your diploma. Your diploma is usually visible in DUO from the second working day after the graduation date, provided the graduation form is processed properly.

Academic degree / title

If you have taken an educational master in science subjects you will receive the Master of Science degree (MSc). In the Netherlands, you can also use the title drs.
Contractors receive a certificate of competence (and therefore no diploma). This certificate certifies that the student meets the competence requirements of the completed programme.
