Thesis kick-off

The next thesis kick-off will take place on Tuesday 10 February from 09.30 to 12:30 at Utrecht Science Park. Can't make it? Tuesday 17 February in the afternoon, we are organizing the thesis kick-off in Dutch. 

The thesis kick-off workshop is for students who want to start preparing for their thesis, as well as for students who are already working on their thesis or research proposal and/or conducting preliminary research. It is helpful if you already have some basic information, for example from a thesis manual, an initial thesis meeting, or a conversation with your supervisor. Or if you already have an idea of what you would like to research.
Important: For substantive or faculty-specific questions, such as resits, changing supervisors, or changing your topic, please contact your supervisor or course coordinator.

What exactly is a thesis and what does such a process look like? The first hour of the workshop is intended for students in the orientation phase (you do not need to have started yet). You will learn which questions to ask and where to find the answers to get off to a good start.

The second hour is for students who want to learn how to plan their research. You will learn how to create a realistic research plan and what you need for your own time management in order to complete your research on time.

In the final hour, you will learn how to define these two crucial elements of a research proposal. A clear research question provides direction for the study and is also an important tool for researchers when making decisions about how to conduct the research.

You can choose to attend part of the workshop.

• If you will only start your thesis in a later period and mainly want to orient yourself now, attending just the first hour is perfectly fine.
• If you have already started working on your research proposal, you can attend only the second and third hours. Because a good plan is partly determined by the research itself, we do recommend attending both of these final parts.
• If you want to orient yourself on your thesis and also refine your planning and research question in one go, you are of course very welcome to attend the entire workshop!
