Placement

Every application is checked to see if you meet the three general conditions for an exchange. When there are more applications than places available a lottery will take place. For university-wide destinations with too many applications, exchange is only possible for one semester. For faculty destinations, we assess your suitability based on academic background, language level and chosen courses if applicable.

Placement procedure

We allocate available places in three rounds.

  • In the first round, as many students as possible are placed at their first choice.
  • Students who have not been placed after this first round are being placed at the destination of their second choice as much as possible.
  • The same thing happens in the third round. You can therefore only be placed at your second (or third) choice if there is still room left at these destinations after the first (or second) round.

Destinations where it is indicated under Selection on the destination page that 'there were more 1st choice applications than available spots' or 'there are always more applicants than available places' were full after round 1 in recent years. We strongly advise against submitting these destinations as your 2nd or 3rd choice.

Your top 3 can consist of a combination of faculty and university-wide destinations. That does not affect your chances. For more than half of the destinations, there are usually more available places than applications. You can therefore be placed there immediately.
