| Academic calendar | Semester I (Fall Semester): September - December Introduction Week The Introduction Week for exchange students takes place in the week prior to the semester. Participation is compulsory for all exchange students. It includes several welcome and information events, a university tour, a city tour and a day trip. |
| Language of instruction | German and English (Most classes in English are at Master level) Language of Instruction: German or English (except language departments). Students should have sufficient proficiency in German and/or English to be able to follow lectures and write exams (level B2 CEFR, level C1 for courses at the English Department). The language of instruction is mentioned in the course catalogue. Most classes in English are at Master level. Language Courses: A German language course for exchange students is offered in the two weeks previous to the semester (at least level A2 CEFR required). Further German courses are offered during the semester on various levels. All German courses are free of charge. For more information, please see www.daf.unibe.ch. |

| Accomodation | There are several students residences. As the number of rooms is limited an early application is highly recommended. More student residences and further information on accommodation can be found at http://www.incoming-accommodation.unibe.ch. Private Accommodation: The University of Bern is member of the student-to-student housing platform Housing Anywhere. Room offers are available at www.housinganywhere.com. |
| Additional information | Please note that our regular as well as exchange students are entitled to take classes and sit exams at the nearby universities of Neuchâtel and Fribourg within the scope of the so-called BeNeFri programme. BeNeFri is a network made up of the universities of Bern, Neuchâtel and Fribourg that allows students to attend lessons at different universities. Note that Fribourg is bilingual French–German and Neuchâtel is a French-speaking University however both offer also a few English lectures per term. The programme has a compensation fund for travel costs, so when your student wants to take one or two courses at one of these universities, he/she gets the money back for the train tickets. Fribourg is only a 20 minutes trip, Neuchâtel a 40 minutes trip by train. |
