  1. Go to Osiris
  2. Go to the 'abroad' tab
  3. Go to 'new request'
  4. Choose 'internship/(field)research/other stay abroad'

Make sure that you inform your internship coordinator by email after completing the application in Osiris.

What do I need to arrange for an internship abroad?

International internship agreement

Use an international internship agreement such as this international internship agreement from EAIE to record the agreements made.

Financing

It can be a challenge to finance your internship abroad. Check whether you are eligible for financial support and grants.

Visas and permits

  • Within the EU, you do not need a visa or work permit.
  • For internships outside Europe, you always need a work permit and/or visa. Please note that arranging this permit can take a lot of time. In developing countries, this can sometimes take up to a year!

Insurance and liability

  • Whether you are sufficiently insured during your internship depends on various factors, such as the amount of your internship allowance, the duration of your internship and your age.
  • It is important that you thoroughly investigate your individual situation before you go on an internship and sign an internship contract. This includes what insurance you have, where you are going to live and how matters are arranged according to the law and your internship contract.

Travel advice

  • When choosing a possible destination, take the following into account: Utrecht University follows the travel advice from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Travel Advice

We recommend that you register for the 24/7 BZ Information Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. With this registration, you will receive information in the event of calamities abroad and changes in the travel advice. We strongly advise you to save the (emergency) number + 31 247247247 and download the '24/7 BZ Reis' app.

Study trips and negative travel advice

Study-related trips (exchange, internship, research) to areas for which a code red has been issued will never be facilitated. Study-related trips to areas for which a code orange has been issued will in principle not be facilitated, unless an exception request has been submitted and approved by the university-wide Negative Travel Advice Committee. You can find information about this procedure on this page.
