Erasmus+ Grants

Utrecht University participates in the Erasmus+ programme, funded by the European Commission, and has been awarded the Erasmus+ Charter for Higher Education.

What is the Erasmus+ programme?

The Erasmus+ programme enables you to follow part of your studies at a partner university in Europe or to do an internship in another European country. Erasmus+ aims to promote international exchange and internships by offering grants.

If you go on an exchange or internship (traineeship) within Europe, you may be eligible for an Erasmus+ grant. This grant contributes to your travel and accommodation costs abroad. The amount of the grant depends on the period of your stay and the location.

Participating countries

All member states of the European Union participate in Erasmus+, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, and Turkey, and the overseas territories of the participating countries.

Switzerland has its own grant programme. If you go there, you may be eligible for the 'Swiss-European Mobility Programme'.

Due to Brexit, the United Kingdom is no longer participating in the Erasmus+ programme.

Exchange

Whether your destination is eligible for an Erasmus+ grant depends not only on the country but also on whether your faculty or Utrecht University has concluded an exchange agreement with that institution.

Additionally, it’s a requirement from the European Commission that you must study abroad full-time (30 ECTS for a semester, or very close to that number). All courses you follow abroad must be recognized as part of the curriculum.

As a consequence, if you go abroad in academic year 2026-2027 or later, your study programme must have elective space (e.g. profileringsruimte) of at least 22,5 ECTS for you to qualify for an Erasmus+ grant. You also qualify for a grant if the exchange is fully integrated into your study programme.

Students in the following study programmes don’t qualify for an Erasmus+ grant for exchange:

  • Bachelor Geneeskunde
  • Bachelor Rechtsgeleerdheid track Notarieel Recht
  • Bachelor Academische lerarenopleiding primair onderwijs (ALPO)
  • Nearly all Master’s programmes

Students in these Master’s programmes can qualify for an Erasmus+ grant for exchange:

  • Intercultural Communication, only for Eurocampus exchange
  • Research Masters of the Faculty of Humanities, except for Linguistics
  • Research master Multidisciplinary Economics
  • Global Challenges for Sustainability (CHARM-EU)
  • Veterinary Medicine

This is not a requirement for Erasmus+ grants for traineeships, only for exchange.
