Utrecht University reserves a limited number of rooms and studios with student housing corporation SSH Short Stay. Because the number of SSH housing is limited and very popular, anticipate that you might not be able to book this way. So also explore other housing options before booking opens!

Who can apply

In order to apply you need to be eligible for the Reserved Accommodation Programme. SSH Short Stay housing is available for Erasmus and Exchange students and new international students who enrol in the first year of an English taught degree programme per September 2019.

When to apply

Utrecht University reserves a separate number of rooms for Degree Students and Erasmus/Exchange Students. It is not possible for Degree Students to book the accommodation reserved for Erasmus/Exchange Students and vice versa. If you are unsure which student group applies to you make sure to reach out to us in time!

Registration date

Registration for SSH Short Stay opens 7 May 2019 onwards for all students eligible for the Reserved Accommodation Programme. Your registration will be reviewed by your faculty and, if correct, you can submit a reservation request on the booking date that applies to you.

Booking date: Degree Students

Students who enrol in the first year of an English taught Bachelor's or Master's degree programme and have an approved SSH Short Stay registration, can submit a booking request on 21 May 2019 9.00 AM Central European Summer Time (CEST).

Booking date: Erasmus/Exchange students

Students who enrol in one or two semesters as an Erasmus / Exchange Student and have an approved SSH Short Stay registration, can submit a booking request on 28 May 2019 9.00 AM Central European Summer Time (CEST).

  1. Registration with SSH Short Stay for the rental period per September 2019 opens 7 May 2019 onwards via the website of SSH (link to webform not yet available)
  2. Your registration will be reviewed by the Faculty where you are planning to study
  3. If your registration is correct you can submit a reservation request on the booking date that applies to you. In the FAQ you can find more information on how to check the status of your registration
  4. If you reserve accommodation you pay a non-refundable reservation fee of 75 euros, a one-off cleaning fee, and the first and last month's rent as a deposit

Do not register before registration opens on 7 May 2019, and only register once. Do not register as another resident type, another semester, with another school or as another student group. This will delay your housing registration and will decrease your chances of successfully booking via SSH Short Stay.

Types of accommodation

SSH Short Stay offer single rooms, shared rooms and self-contained studios. The accommodation is mostly situated in (international) student residences. With the exception of the private studios, tenants share facilities like the bathroom, kitchen and washing machine with the other housemates.  All accommodations have internet provided.

Average rent

The monthly rental fees are roughly 350 euros for a shared room, to 425-535 euros for a single room, and up to 700 euros for a private studio.

Rent allowance

If you are 23 years or older and also meet the other individual requirements such as contract duration, some of SSH Short Stay's private studios are eligible for the government regulated scheme called rent allowance. This means that you can possibly benefit from a cost reduction off your monthly net rent. The single and shared rooms are not eligible for rent allowance. Read more about rent allowance.

Rental periods

The accommodation in the Reserved Accommodation Programme is only available for fixed rental periods and for the first year of studies only:

  • Semester Erasmus/Exchange students: 27 August 2019 - 31 January 2020
  • Full year Erasmus/Exchange students: 27 August 2019 - 30 June 2020
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree students: 29 August 2019 - 21 August 2020

SSH Short Stay offers a range of accommodation at Utrecht Science Park and the nearby Municipality of Zeist. They also offer a number of rooms in Utrecht’s City Centre. All accommodation is situated within travelling distance from the university. Visit the SSH website for an overview of the residences.

Will I be assigned a ranking number based on my time and date of registration?

No, the date and time that you register does not have influence on your chances when booking opens. Do bear in mind that once you registered it can take some time before your faculty of studies has checked your registration. We therefore advise you not to wait to a later date than 7 May with your registration. It is also important that you only register once and carefully check if your details are correct.

How do I increase my chances of booking SSH Short Stay accommodation?

Once booking opens on the booking date and time that applies to you, the accommodation is rented out on a first come, first served basis. You are therefore advised not to postpone this to a later date or time. Also take into account that the servers will be busy when booking opens. Still, even if you keep to the booking date and time, there is a chance that you will not be able to arrange housing via SSH Short Stay. Take this in mind and also explore alternative options beforehand.

What payments do I make when I reserve accommodation with SSH Short Stay?

Registration with SSH Short Stay is free of charge. Only when you reserve SSH Short Stay accommodation you need to make all the payments to complete your booking in time. You pay the first and last month's rent as a down payment, as well as the a non-refundable reservation fee of 75 euros and a one-off cleaning fee to SSH.

Do I receive a refund if I cancel my reservation with SSH Short Stay prior to my arrival?

The down payment is only partially refundable, and only when you are not accepted by Utrecht University to the programme you have applied for. The reservation fee is non-refundable. You can find more information about the cancellation policy in the Terms and Conditions that apply to the rental contract via this link to the SSH Website.

Can I rent SSH Short Stay accommodation for longer or shorter?

This is not possible. SSH Short Stay accommodation is only available for fixed rental periods and only for the first year of studies. If you are looking for accommodation for a shorter time frame, for example because you are planning to conduct research or do an internship abroad, it is not possible to book this accommodation.

Does SSH Short Stay offer accommodation to couples or families?

SSH Short Stay does not offer accommodation for students who bring their spouse, partner or family.  If you are looking for accommodation that is suitable for a family, please read our tips and tricks that can help you find accommodation on your own.

Can I register as an Erasmus/Exchange student if I was unable to book as a Degree student?

The accommodation for Erasmus/Exchange students is not available to Degree students and vice versa. If you register as an Erasmus/Exchange student but are actually a Bachelor's or Master's Degree Student, your registration will not be approved.

What if I am not able to book via the Reserved Accommodation Programme?

Because the number of reserved accommodations is limited, most students have to search for a room on their own. This can be difficult and time-consuming but the right preparation can increase your chances. At Utrecht University we aim to help and inform you best we can. Follow this link for tips, tricks and important things to keep in mind during your search. Also, if you have any questions or need additional advice make sure to reach out to us!
