Throughout the UU, students and staff contribute their thoughts on educational matters to the decision-making bodies. Would you like to join them? Then become a member of one of our employee participation bodies. You will gain experience in thinking about changes and improvements in a large organization. Later in your career it can be very beneficial if you can include board or committee experience in your resume. 

There are various employee participation bodies:

  • Education Committee (OC) 
    In the education committee you are engaged in the quality of education.
  • Faculty Council
    The faculty council discusses the faculty policies in the areas of education, research, finance, personnel & organization with the faculty board.
  • The Board of Education Directors
    The Board of Education Directors discusses education matters and developments within the faculty.
  • The University Council
    In the University Council you discuss the central university policies in the areas of education, research, finance, personnel & organization with the UU Executive Board.

FACULTY COUNCIL OF SCIENCE 

The Faculty Council is the representative advisory body for students, lecturers and other faculty employees. The Faculty Council has right of consent or advisory rights on a large number of matters within the Faculty, including education. In council meetings, important decisions are taken that affect the course of affairs within the entire faculty. 

As a student you can apply for one of the seven student seats on the council. Elections for this take place every year in May. 

Members of the Faculty Council 
Board members are elected for a period of two years, student members for one year.

STUDENT MEMBER OF THE FACULTY BOARD 

As a student member, you keep an eye on matters that are important to students within the faculty and, on behalf of the Faculty of Science, you maintain contact with study associations and student organizations within Utrecht. 

Ties Bakker is currently the student member of the Faculty Board. 

The Faculty Board consists of the following members: 

  • Dean
  • Vice Dean for Education
  • Vice Dean for Research 
  • Director
  • Student member 

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

As a student board member, you are expected to:

  • be present at the weekly board meetings and contribute to discussions about policy making and all other ongoing matters within the faculty. Particular attention is paid to those matters that concern students and education within the Faculty;
  • become a member of the BoS-UGS. During the monthly meetings, developments and current affairs in the field of education are discussed by the education directors of the programs;
  • form a bridge between the Faculty Board, the Faculty Council and student organizations. 

TERM OF OFFICE 

Student board membership is a paid position. It is a valuable experience and a good addition to your resume. It will take you about 16 hours a week, mainly in the form of meetings. The term of office for the student board member is one year and starts on September 1.

Student members in administrative bodies and departmental committees 

The Faculty of Science consists of six departments (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science & Information Science, Mathematics and Pharmaceutical Sciences), each with its own department board and Education Advisory Committee (OAC). A student has a seat on the board of the faculty, each OAC has several student members.

The University Council discusses the central university policy in the areas of education, research, finance, personnel & organization with the UU Executive Board. The council provides solicited and unsolicited advice to the Board and has the right of consent for certain matters.
