*Requirements for free elective space: at least 15 EC of 45 EC of the free elective space must consist of courses at level 2 or 3.
Free electives
You can choose free electives (in the EER referred to as ‘optional extension courses’) to a maximum of 45 ECs. You can select courses from the entire UU course catalogue* or even courses offered at other Dutch* or international universities. However, you can also decide to use part or even all of your free elective space to take additional major-bound elective courses.
*Dutch-speaking students are allowed to choose optional extension course that have Dutch as the language of instruction.
Important aspects to check in the course planner beforehand:
- Always check the entry requirements, and if you are not sure you meet those, contact the course coordinator.
- Always check if English is the language of instruction, and if you are not sure, contact the course coordinator. Even if Dutch is the language of instruction, sometimes all course materials are in English, and teachers of especially level 3 courses are fine to switch to English.
- Always check if the course content does not overlap with courses you already took. If you suspect overlap contact the Board of Examiners to get permission to include the course in your Bachelor’s programme. Otherwise, you may run the risk that a free elective course will not be added to your transcript to complete your programme (180 ECs).
Minor
A minor is a cohesive package of usually four courses (30 EC), belonging to a different field of study than your major. At UU, you can choose from more than 100 different minors. You can also choose a minor at another university, for which you have to get approval from the Board of Examiners.
Why a minor?
You can choose a minor to deepen your knowledge in a completely different field of study, but also, for example, to prepare for a master's degree that does not exactly match your bachelor's programme. You can also choose a minor that prepares you more for the job market.
Some suggestions for MBLS students:
Study abroad
You can choose to study abroad. This usually will be one semester (5 months), but you can also go for a full year. Please note that this always requires approval from the Board of Examiners, so start all preparations on time (about a year in advance).
