Curriculum

The programme of Game and Media Technology (120 EC) usually takes two years to complete and consists of four parts:

Mandatory courses

16 EC

Primary electives

45 EC

Secondary electives

15 EC

Research part

44 EC

At the start of your study, you are required to compose a study plan from the components below, specifying the courses you plan to take, and when. The plan has to be approved by the programme coordinator. A form is mailed to when you start your master to check the validity of your plan.

Mandatory courses

You will take two 7.5 EC courses, two 0.5 EC courses. See the drop-down below for an overview.

Primary courses

You must choose six 7.5 EC courses or four 7.5 EC courses and one 15 EC course out of a list (see the drop-down below).

Secondary electives

The secondary electives are meant to broaden your interests and skills. You can gain work experience in industry by performing an internship on a specific research theme, or, with a profile direct your career towards education, communication or management or simply take extra courses that match your interest.

What can you choose?

A profile

To expand the thematic range of your master's programme, you can replace the secondary electives plus 15 EC primary electives by courses from a specific profile.

Two extra courses (7.5 EC each)

You can choose two 7.5 EC courses to give your programme a personal profile, to be chosen more liberally, also from other programmes.

Take two courses in the categories below:

  • More courses from the primary electives
  • An individual "Capita Selecta" (upon approval)
  • Courses from another programme in Utrecht University (upon approval)
  • Deficiency courses: courses from the bachelor's programme (in Dutch), which may be needed if you have non-standard background knowledge (upon approval).

Research part

In the Research part of the programme, you will combine the theoretical knowledge you obtained during courses with practical experimental skills leading to the Master’s thesis.

We organise a weekly colloquium in which staff members, guests and students give presentations on game & media technology topics. The colloquium is a good opportunity to learn about the research done by others, and game & media technology in general. It also gives you inspiration for your own (thesis) project. To obtain the 4 EC, it is mandatory to attend at least 25 colloquium sessions, and to give one presentation yourself.
