Social safety
Social safety is an important theme at Utrecht University. We strive to provide a pleasant and safe environment to work and study in, for everyone. It is a theme that requires constant attention from all of us. Together we must stand against any form of inappropriate behaviour. By setting boundaries together, a culture change takes place that helps to prevent inappropriate behaviour from continuing and becoming normal.
Addressing someone about inappropriate behaviour
It may seem harmless, but bullying, gossiping, excluding others or making jokes at someone's expense are forms of inappropriate behaviour, along with (sexual) harassment, discrimination and violence. What do you do when you see this happen? Do you look the other way or do you take action? As a bystander, you can make a difference by addressing the inappropriate behaviour and making it subject to discussion. Because not everyone who suffers from inappropriate behaviour can or dares to speak up about it.
Equality, Diversity & Inclusion
Social safety is also about equality, diversity and inclusion. Utrecht University wants to make a visible contribution to an inclusive university community, to a just society, and to equal rights and opportunities for all. The university believes it is important that students and staff feel safe and sees the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) programme as a central starting point for the policy domains of education, research and impact. The programme is focused on creating an open and inspiring community, where everyone can feel at home, with space for new forms of thinking, learning and working.
What else is the university doing to promote equality, diversity and inclusion?
