Binding Study Advice (BSA)

If so, you can choose to terminate your enrolment before 1 February. If you do this before 1 February of your first academic year by submitting a deregistration request no later than 31 January, you will not receive any binding study advice that academic year. This means that you can re-enrol in this programme at a later date.

If you terminate your enrolment before 1 February in your first academic year, you can use the DUO 1 February regulation. You will then not have to pay back your student travel product and any supplementary grant from DUO.

If there is a chance that you will receive negative binding study advice, do not wait till you have officially received this advice. Look into an alternative bachelor’s programme on time and apply to enrol in a new programme no later than 1 May so that you can participate in the matching activities on time. You can submit the supporting documents proving your negative binding study advice at a later date.

If you receive negative binding study advice after 1 May, you must submit an enrolment request to Studielink and subsequently submit the completed exceptions form no later than 31 July 2023. You will receive a link to this form by e-mail. Be sure to do this no later than 31 July, since you will no longer be able to participate in matching after that date and thus will not be admitted to the programme.

Even if you are not yet certain that you will receive negative binding study advice (but are aware that this is a realistic possibility), you are expected to apply for matching on time. Do not wait until the very last minute.

• If you obtain 45 EC or more in 2025-2026, you will receive a positive BSA. EC from granted exemptions or from courses taken in previous academic years do not count;

• If you have completed the first-year programme of your curriculum by the end of 2025-2026. Exemptions and courses from previous years do count. More information about this option can be obtained from your programme's study advisor.

If you obtain less than 45 EC. If you receive a negative BSA, you may no longer enrol in the programme for four years.

Would you like to apply for a different programme? If so, please submit an application via Studielink. You will then receive an exemption form by email. Please submit the completed form by 31 July at the latest. After this date, you will no longer be able to take part in the matching process and therefore cannot be admitted to a programme.

If there is a proven force majeure situation, which have been reported in time to the Study Advisor, it is possible to qualify for a postponed BSA. The programme director takes a reported force majeure situation into account when issuing the BSA. With a postponed BSA, a final BSA will be issued at the end of the second year.

In this regard, you can still achieve a positive BSA in your second year of study if you have earned 45 EC in that year. Credits already obtained in the first year of study do not count towards this. Alternatively, you may still be eligible if you have obtained all the credits for the first year of the programme. In this case, granted exemptions and modules from previous years of study do count towards the total. You can request further information about this option from the study adviser for your programme.

Please note: is important that you contact the study advisor as soon as possible in these situations, so that they are aware of the force majeure situations and can help you.

If you have received a final decision, you can send an email to science.bsa-bezwaar@uu.nl by 31 July 2026 to appeal against a negative BSA.

In your email you need describe your personal situation briefly. Supporting evidence (letters, statements, etc.) must be provided, but if the study advisor has already received (some of) your evidence, also indicate this in your email.

The BSA committee will consider whether a decision can be made based on your email. If the committee is unable to reach a decision, you may be invited to a hearing. The hearings are scheduled for Thursday 20 August 2026 and Friday 21 August 2026.
