Free elective space

You can use your free elective space to deepen and broaden your knowledge. On this page, you will find information on what you can choose to fill your free elective space.

Free elective space (45 EC)

To be filled with:

  • Free electives
  • Minor
  • Study abroad

Free electives

You can choose free-elective courses (in the EER referred to as ‘optional extension courses’) to a maximum of 45 EC.

Please note: difference between major-bound electives and free electives

Within the programme, you must complete 15 EC of major-bound electives and 45 EC of free electives. This adds up to a total of 60 EC. Information about the major electives can be found on the study programme page. The information below is only about the free electives.

Requirements

From the free electives, at least 7.5 EC must be at level 2 (deepened) and 22.5 EC at level 3 (advanced). This leaves 15 EC for level 1 (introductory) courses. Of course, you can also complete all 45 EC at level 3 if you want, or any other combination given the above minimum level requirements.

Important to keep in mind:

  • Especially when you choose electives outside CPS, notice that there might be specific entry requirements for courses and note that registration periods might be different at other faculties / universities.
  • Electives outside Utrecht University must be approved by the Board of Examiners before you register for these courses.
  • Be aware that overlap with content of courses that you have already completed is not allowed. When in doubt, please contact the Board of Examiners.

Minor

A minor is a cohesive package of usually four courses (30 EC), belonging to a different field of study than your major. At UU, you can choose from more than 100 different minors. You can also choose a minor at another university, for which you have to get approval from the Board of Examiners. Tip: make sure you read the requirements and can match them when choosing a minor.

Study abroad

You can choose to study abroad. This usually will be one semester (5 months), but you can also go for a full year. Please note that this always requires approval from the Board of Examiners, so start all preparations on time (about a year in advance).
