Research Project

Also known as: thesis (project) or master research

The Research Project will be performed at one of the groups at the Marine and Atmospheric Research, Utrecht (IMAU).

Set-up Research Project

The Research Project is split into Part 1 and Part 2, which are performed in the same group and supervised by the same staff members:

  • Research Project Part 1 (14 EC) constitutes the first 9 weeks of the project and is concluded with a Go/No Go meeting.
  • Research Project Part 2 (30 EC) is the remaining 19 weeks of the project and is concluded with the writing of an MSc thesis.

The splitting of the Research Project into two parts does not affect your day-to-day work but serves as feedback/reflection moment and as a way to register the outcome of the Go/No Go evaluation.

Important to know:

  • You can choose a research topic of your own interest within one of the groups affiliated with IMAU. Projects at other universities or external research institutes, including KNMI, TNO, or RIVM, are also possible after consultation with the programme coordinator or director.
  • You will shape your own Research Project and participate as a group member in the group’s team meetings and discussions.
  • Besides conducting research and writing your thesis, you will also learn to give presentations and discuss the progress and relevance of your research.
