Phase 1: Getting Started
This process is executed before the official start of your Thesis Project and is excluded from the duration of the Thesis Project.

Follow this checklist to get started with your Thesis Project:
Step 1: Project matching
Thesis projects can be submitted by ADS staff and external organisations, all projects are reviewed and approved by the ADS Thesis coordinator. Students cannot submit projects.
The ADS Thesis coordinator compiles a “project book,” detailing each project’s scope, research questions, data, and requirements, which is then circulated among students. Students indicate their project preferences, and an algorithm is used to allocate projects, maximizing each student’s preference as closely as possible.
Supervision
For each project, multiple people are involved. It is important to be aware of the distinction between supervisors and examiners. See the dropdowns below for an overview of who is involved in your project and more information about expectations for the supervision.
Please note: sometimes it is convenient to include someone in a different role as second examiner, for example, a PhD candidate. In such cases, the first examiner should contact the thesis coordinator to file this exemption request with the Board of Examiners.
If a truly irresolvable conflict arises between the student and the supervisor they should contact the thesis coordinator. For smaller problems, the student can contact the study advisor, who may serve as a mediator or request another thesis advisor.
Step 2: Contact supervisors and discuss the project
As soon as the matching is completed, supervisors and students are notified. Students are encouraged to contact their supervisors to set up a introductory meeting before the start of period 4. It is important to discuss expectations, the project, the dataset and establish how often you will meet with your students. If an NDA or internship contract is required for a project, it should be set up as soon as possible. Please see the instructions for internship contracts in the dropdown below.
*Going abroad for ADS Thesis Projects is not recommended.
Step 3: Register your project in Osiris
When you have found your subject, you have to submit an application form via Osiris Student. Select ‘My Cases’, ‘Start a new case’, 'Thesis and graduation' and then ‘Thesis Applied Data Science’
The information you will need for the form are:
- Names of project supervisor/first examiner, second examiner and/or daily supervisor
- Your internship contract if needed
- Planning of regular meetings with your supervisor(s)
- Workload per week
- A brief description of the project (can be copied from the project book)
- The start/end dates of the project, see important dates for the recommended end date.
Wait for approval
Please note that once the student has submitted their case, it will have to be approved by the first and second examiners. Examiners should receive a notification via email when they need to provide this approval.
Students are responsible for navigating the Osiris Case process. Students need to submit their Osiris Case two weeks after the start of period four at the latest. The Board of Examiners will not approve Osiris cases submitted after this deadline.
