Additionally the Language Learning Programme at UPF (PEI) offers introductory courses to the Catalan language each of the terms. These are free of charge for exchange students and are recommended (https://www.upf.edu/web/idiomesupf/catala).

Language of instruction

Primarily Spanish and Catalan, very few English-taught courses available.

Requirements

Due to the limited supply of courses in English, a whole study period solely in English is unfeasible.

Although sometimes some English-taught courses seem to be offered, you will have to be prepared to follow mainly Spanish-taught courses. The reason for this is that the English taught courses are often full or not available when you try to register for them. Hence, if your level of Spanish is not sufficient, you might not be able to reach the minimum required amount of ECTS (also for the Erasmus+ grant!)

Language requirement: a minimum language level of B1 (CEFR) in Spanish at the time of the Utrecht University Study Abroad application. Students can hand in the following documents in Osiris:

  • Language certificate from a recognised language school
  • Letter by (high school) Spanish teacher attesting your Spanish level
  • Babel free language level test results

The International Exchange Office highly recommends B2 level at the moment of exchange in order to fully participate in courses.

Housing assistance

The Mobility and Reception Office does not provide any accommodation service directly. However, UPF is a member of the BCU, a public service that assists international students coming to Barcelona. It manages the Resa Housing Service with a wide range of flats and rooms to rent and information about student residence halls. UPF has direct agreements with some residence halls.
