Fraud and plagiarism

• Copying and pasting texts from digital sources such as encyclopedias and digital papers without quotation marks and references
• Copying and pasting texts from the internet without quotation marks and references
• Copying printed material such as books, magazines and encyclopedias without quotation marks and references
• Using a translation of the above-mentioned texts without quotation marks and references
• Paraphrasing the above-mentioned texts without (proper) references: paraphrases must be marked as such (by explicitly linking the text to the original author in the text or note), so that the impression is not given that it concerns the student's own ideas
• Copying images, sounds or test materials from others without references and thus passing it off as one's own work
• Resubmitting previously made work by the student without citing the source and passing it off as original work produced within the framework of the course, unless this is expressly permitted in the course or by the teacher
• Copying work from other students and passing it off as one's own work. If this is done with the permission of the other student, the latter is complicit in plagiarism
• Also when plagiarism is committed by one of the authors in a joint paper, the other authors are complicit in plagiarism if they could or should have known that the other was committing plagiarism
• Submitting papers that have been acquired from a commercial institution (such as an internet site with excerpts or papers) or that have been written by someone else for payment

Collecting and processing literature is a daily activity during your studies. Make sure that you deal with sources that have been created by others responsibly. In most cases, the material of others is protected by copyright. As a student, you may link to electronic sources that are not freely available, but for which the library has concluded a license for use within Utrecht University.

If you write a thesis, you are the author and hold the copyright. You therefore have the right to decide how your material is distributed and/or commercialised. You are responsible for maintaining academic integrity.

Are you writing a thesis or conducting other research? Then you must adhere to proper quoting and source referencing. Bachelor's and master's theses are checked for plagiarism. You must also consider copyright when using images, sounds, and video material.

When you upload a thesis to the Thesis Archive of Utrecht University, you guarantee that no copyrights have been violated in your thesis. You are personally liable for any copyright infringement.
