Secure your devices

You are responsible for keeping your mobile phone, tablet and/or laptop as safe as possible. Below we give a number of tips.

Use an access code or password

Make sure you set an access code, password (or variant such as your fingerprint or iris scanner) on your device. This way, no one else has access to your data.

Encrypt your device

If you lose for example your phone or laptop, someone else can read the hard drive or memory card. Encryption prevents this.

  • An iPhone or iPad is already encrypted by default. With Android, you can manually turn on encryption. Search for "SD card encryption" in settings.
  • On your laptop, you can turn on tools such as VeraCrypt (open source), Bitlocker (Windows) or FileVault (Mac).

Prepare search or wipe data remotely

If you lose your device, you want to know where it is as quickly as possible - and possibly wipe all the data on your phone (and make it unusable). Speed is important in this situation.

Your laptop or PC

In addition to the above, you can do the following:

  • Install a virus scanner. This often also offers protection for surfing the internet and your e-mail. As a student, you will receive a discount via SURFspot (log in with your Solis-id).
  • Always update your operating system (turn on automatic updates).
  • Use a VPN to encrypt your data traffic when connecting to public Wi-Fi.
  • Away from your laptop for a while? Lock your computer (via Windows with Windows key + L and on Mac with Control-Command-Q)
