Termination of your studies
Are you considering to terminate your studies or are you about to graduate? Here you will find information about how to deregister, the conditions that apply and the financial consequences.
How do I terminate my enrollment?
If you want to (temporarily) terminate your study programme or are about to graduate, submit a request for termination of enrolment via Studielink. You will then receive a confirmation of receipt of your request. In the case of graduation, you must first have graduated fully. Information about graduation can be found on the Graduation page of your study programme.
What are the conditions for termination of enrolment?
You can deregister at any time. Please note that a request for termination of enrolment only takes effect on the first day of the following month. It is not possible to submit a request for termination of enrolment on a date in the past. If you no longer wish to be registered as of September, you do not need to submit a request for termination of enrolment via Studielink. Your registration will automatically expire on 1 September.
Graduating in the summer
If you graduate in June, July or August, you do not need to deregister. If you deregister on 1 July or 1 August, you are not entitled to a refund of tuition fees. If you do not deregister, your registration will automatically end on 1 September. You must cancel your student finance and public transport with DUO on 1 September and no later than this date, otherwise you will receive a fine. You may also cancel these on an earlier date, regardless of whether you are still registered, but not later.
What are the financial consequences of deregistration?
After deregistration, you will only owe tuition fees for the months that you were registered. If you have paid more, you will automatically receive one twelfth of the total tuition fees for that academic year for each month that you deregister from, refunded to the account from which the tuition fees were collected. This does not apply if you wish to remain registered for one or more other programmes.
Please note that no tuition fees will be refunded if you deregister as of 1 July or 1 August. Deregistration as of July or August is therefore not possible; this will only be processed if an explicit request is made.
Student facilities and public transport
After deregistration, you can still use student facilities that require a Solis ID for 90 days. The library facilities can only be accessed from the library itself immediately after deregistration.
You must cancel your student finance and public transport student travel product yourself at DUO. As soon as you are no longer a student, your rights to other agreements that you concluded as a student, such as student insurance, student bank account, student residence permit and student housing, also expire. Are you 30 years old? Then you can no longer reactivate your student finance and public transport after deregistration.
