Complaints, objections and appeals
As a student, you may encounter situations where you are not satisfied with the treatment by a staff member or service of the university. It is important to know what steps you can take to express and resolve your complaint. Below you will find the differences between a complaint, an appeal and an objection. Additionally, you will find instructions how to file a complaint, appeal or objection.
Complaint (about a conduct) | You disagree with the conduct of an employee or department within the university against you. |
---|---|
Objection and appeal (about a decision) | You disagree with a (written) decision that was made in relation to you by/on behalf of the Executive Board e.g. the Central Student Administration or the director of Student & Academic Affairs. In this case, you can submit an objection within six weeks.
If it regards a (written) decision that has been taken by the Board of Examiners or an examiner (for example an examination result or the binding study advice) or it concerns your admission to a Master's programme, you can submit an appeal to the Examination Appeals Board. There is no option to file an objection against this type of decision, but you may appeal within six weeks. |
For more information about complaints, objections and appeals, see Student Charter.
Where can I make a complaint?
If you have a problem with a university employee or service, you can (first) try to resolve it informally yourself. You can also choose to file a formal complaint (afterwards).
Official complaint not always possible
It is not possible to file a complaint about a general regulation or policy of the university. A complaint must relate to a conduct by (someone within) the university towards you. You can, of course, express your opinion on these subjects and/or enter into dialogue, for example through the employee and student representation body.
Where can I submit an objection or appeal?
If you disagree with a decision addressed to you personally (for example, from/on behalf of the Executive Board, the Director of Students & Academic Affairs, the Central Student Administration, the Board of Examiners, or an examiner), you can submit an objection or appeal within six weeks from the date the decision was sent to you (in case of a grade announced via Osiris: date of change). To do this, you can use the digital form.
