What is spam email?

Spam is unsolicited e-mail (usually advertising) send by companies or individuals.

Those e-mails usually are send to hundreds-of-thousands mail addresses in one go, simply because it is cheap and simple medium to use. Regularly mail systems of organisations are illegally used for this. The systems can be overloaded and in the worst case scenario get completely jammed with all damage because of it.

Most organisations, like the university, use anti-spam filters for their mail system. Serious cases of spam endangering the continuity of the mail traffic, are actively removed. Less severe spam messages are marked ***SPAM*** and contained in your spam box. Therefor check your spam box every now and then to see if there are no important messages have landed in there. Verify ALWAYS before opening an e-mail if the sender can be trusted .
