UU AI-Chat: Utrecht University’s new AI platform, now available
More and more students are using AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Mistral or Claude. From now on, all students at Utrecht University (UU) can use UU AI-chat, the university’s generative AI environment, free of charge and without usage limits.
What can you do with it?
UU AI-chat gives you access to several language models in a single environment. You choose which model best suits your task. A simple question often does not require a resource-intensive model. For more complex tasks, you can choose a more powerful model. UU AI-chat shows you how much computing power a model requires, allowing you to weigh quality against energy consumption.
But UU AI-chat can do more than just answer questions. For example, you can:
- Upload documents and ask questions about them;
- Work with projects and your own prompt library;
- Search the internet for up-to-date information;
- Create images and diagrams;
- Analyse data and run code.
Why use UU AI-chat?
With public or commercial AI services, Utrecht University does not always have control over what happens to the data you enter. In addition, many AI services require payment, making them less accessible. UU AI-chat is designed for use within the university, which offers several advantages:
- Your chat history remains within the UU environment;
- Your data is not used to train AI models;
- Other users cannot view your chats;
- It is free to use and has no usage limits.
Working with AI

Remain critical
Please note that AI can provide incorrect information. Bear in mind that the information generated is not always complete, accurate or up to date. Therefore, remain critical and use your own judgement. You are responsible for evaluating the results and what you do with them.
