Use of own laptop in computer practicals

Mobile devices have increasingly become integrated into every aspect of our lives. We therefore ask that you use your own laptop in computer practicals as of September 2018. This will make education more flexible and the number of computer rooms can be reduced. It will also ensure that you always have access to educational software wherever you are and make cooperation during practicals easier.

How does this affect you?

  • If you already own a laptop, you can continue to work with it, as long as it doesn't cause any problems in your study.
  • If you need to purchase a new laptop, we recommend a Windows laptop with the specifications listed below. You can choose the supplier and brand. Campusshop and Surfspot have special offers for students.
  • You can use an Apple laptop. However, for specific courses you will additionally need a Windows licence and virtualisation software -such as Parallels- to run Windows software on your Apple.

In a course itself you will be informed about the educational software required for that course. This is available for free via MyWorkplace.

Looking ahead

In the coming months, we will keep you informed about how to prepare your own laptop for computer practicals and where you can go for support.

If you have any urgent questions in the meantime, please contact Claudia Heres via bscinfo.geo@uu.nl.
