PRIDE 2024 was a big success
Since 2022, Utrecht University and the Utrecht University of Applied Sciences have been participating together in the Utrecht Canal Pride. This year, 45 members from UU and 45 from HU took to the water with the theme 'Don't let your love go to waste!'.
Speeches
The day began with a ceremony attended by members of the Executive Board from both HU and UU, Diversity Dean John de Wit, and HR Director Aletta Huizenga. Margot van der Starre, Vice President of UU, opened with Audre Lorde’s poem “Who Said It Was Simple,” highlighting the strength and challenges of the LGBTQ+ community.
John de Wit emphasized the importance of both celebrating and continuing the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. He spoke about the progress made since the Stonewall uprising in 1969 and the ongoing challenges faced by queer individuals today. He also explained the inclusive initiatives at Utrecht University, such as gender-neutral toilets, the ability to choose your gender in registrations, and special leave for individuals undergoing transition.
Today is about being proud of who we are and showing it. Emancipation and celebrating our freedoms goes hand in hand.
Boat trip
