Until April 2018, Utrecht University will measure the use of the teaching rooms in the Ruppert building and the Educatorium. The number of people present in the teaching rooms will be counted on the basis of Wi-Fi signals. These measurements form part of a test to gauge the current occupancy and use of the teaching rooms and will provide a good overview of how the rooms are actually being used.
Utrecht University is faced with a number of challenges as regards timetabling and is always looking for ways to improve the quality of the timetables and the efficient usage of teaching rooms. This requires insight in the actual occupancy of the teaching rooms. The aim of this test is to provide the university with more data to help it tackle this problem.
Lecturers, students and other visitors to the building will not notice anything of these automated measurements. Measures have been taken to protect privacy. The measurements will be taking place starting Monday 18 December.
