Utrecht University chooses to reduce the number of staffed catering locations from nineteen to twelve by 8 July 2020 because of a tender for catering. The restaurant in de University Library in the city centre, the kiosk in Janskerkhof 2-3 and Goliath in the David de Wied building is three of the catering locations that will be closed. The Sodexo staff working at these locations is going to work at other UU catering locations. Because of that, the three locations will close per 23 December 2019.
Why are the three locations closing before 8 July 2020?
Sodexo and the employees concerned have been looking for suitable solutions for those who work at one of the UU catering locations that will close down. The employees of the restaurant in the University Library, the kiosk in Janskerkhof 2-3 and Goliath are going to work at other UU catering locations. The result is that the three locations will close per 23 December 2019. Utrecht University understands that students might find it annoying that the catering locations are closing already. However, we kindly ask for your understanding. The university wishes to contribute to the redeployment of the Sodexo employees. Many of them have been working at the UU for some time now.
Remaining catering facilities
In all buildings there are vending machines for hot drinks, soft drinks and snacks at various places. The university is going to investigate whether the number of machines can be increased in the David de Wied building and Janskerkhof 2-3. In November, extra vending machines have already been placed in the restaurant area in the University Library in the city centre. Espresso bar Lodewijk will remain open in the library, also after 8 July 2020.
What will happen at the locations of the catering facilities?
It is not yet clear what will replace the catering facilities in the three buildings. Project groups with people from different organisational units will make plans for this.
The contract with the current caterer Sodexo expires on 8 July 2020. That is why a tender process is being carried out to sign a contract with a caterer. To ensure that the tender is successful and future-proof, Utrecht University has decided to reduce the number of staffed catering locations.
