Here you can find information about the graduation process for Master's students at U.S.E.
Graduation Procedure
Please check your study progress review (SVO) in Osiris prior to your graduation. To graduate, you must meet the following requirements:
You must fulfil all the requirements of your examination programme.*
All results obtained must have been processed in OSIRIS.
You must be enrolled at Utrecht University.

The Board of Examiners will review whether you meet the graduation requirements every month. The verification date is the date on which the Board of Examiners checks whether you fulfilled the graduation requirements. Your graduation date is the last day of the month in which your final result is registered in Osiris. You can pick up your diploma approximately 2 weeks after the verification date.
N.B. In July and August Osiris will be checked more often to monitor which students are eligible for graduation. When you graduate in this period the graduation date will be August 31st 2024.

If the Board of Examiners verifies that you have met all the graduation requirements, they will inform you by email. This email contains your graduation date and other information, such as terminating your enrolment and your student grant.
If you wish to participate in the Graduation Ceremony, please indicate this on the web form that will be linked in the email. You have five working days to return the form. Without this information it is not possible to participate in the Ceremony.
If you require a graduation statement, or postponement of graduation (see below), you can request this by replying to the graduation email.
Attend a Ceremony
If you have confirmed that you will attend the graduation ceremony (see step 2), you will collect your diploma at the ceremony.
All ceremonies are in cap and gown, which can be borrowed from U.S.E. free of charge. You will be asked to deposit your ID or driver’s license.
Family members and friends are welcome to attend the reception. More information about the number of guests will follow in the formal invitation sent in early September.
The date for the graduation ceremony depends on your master's programme. Ceremonies take place in the evening, after 6:30pm.

Pick up your diploma at the student desk:
You can pick up your diploma at the Student Information Desk (for opening hours: see the contact tab) approximately 2 weeks after the verification date. Please bring your ID with you.
Authorise someone else to pick up your diploma
If you are not able to pick up your diploma yourself, you can authorise somebody else to pick it up for you. Please fill out this authorisation form. Please note that the person picking up your diploma has to bring their ID with them.
Receive your diploma by post (only to addresses outside of the Netherlands)
If you are not able to pick up your diploma and you don't live in the Netherlands, you can request to receive your diploma at your home address by filling in the diploma by post form. Your diploma can only be sent out after it is available for pickup.
We will only send the diploma and the diploma supplement. Please note that it is not possible to send a certified copy of your diploma, as your signature should be on the diploma first.
We will send the documents using PostNL and you will receive the Track and Trace number once we received the payment.
Practical Information
Our grading system will be noted on the appendix of your diploma.
A weighted average grade is published on the International Diploma Supplement. It is published as a weighted average grade on the ten point scale.
The Board of Examiners will verify whether you have met the requirements for graduating cum laude. More information about cum laude can be found in the Education and Examination Regulations.
If you want to postpone your graduation you may submit your request to the Board of Examiners. You can do this within two weeks after receiving the email that you have met the graduation requirements. This email will state detailed information about postponement.
In 2023-2024 postponement will certainly be granted if you:
- Are to assume a board position for which a board scholarship from Utrecht University is available
- Are to do an internship
- Are to follow a course abroad
Postponement granted
If your request for postponement is granted, you will receive a notification. The notification will state until which date the postponement will be valid. After this date, you will once again receive notification that you have met the graduation requirements. You will then be told on which date you graduate.
Postponement not granted
If your request for postponement is not granted, you will receive a notification. You will also be notified of your graduation date and given information about subjects such as the termination of your registration and your student grant.
What to consider when you are (soon to be) graduating
When you are about to graduate, there are a few things you have to keep in mind:
If you have a DigiD and graduated after 1995, you can obtain certification of your graduation directly from the DUO diploma registry (only available in Dutch). If you don’t have a DigiD, or if you graduated before 1995, you can request certification of your graduation via this online form. Read more about verification of education.

- The Utrecht University Fund is the University’s alumni organisation. The fund runs events and activities for graduates of Utrecht University and supports the student experience by funding activities by and for students.
- Are you a recent graduate? Stay up-to-date on all activities for alumni.
