Internships

Are you a second- or third-year bachelor's student and would you like to gain some work experience? Internships are the perfect opportunity to better come to grips with your talents, skills, and abilities and to explore the practical value of your university education.

Format

Internship of 7.5 EC

consists of at least 6 weeks/30 days full time (equivalent)

Internship of 15 EC

consists of at least 10 weeks/50 days full time (including a research component)

Entry requirement for both versions

minimum score of 90 EC

Step 1: Find an Internship

Start looking for an internship approximately three months before the starting date. An internship abroad will require at least 6 months to one year prior to your anticipated internship.

The essential requirements for the internship position are:

  • the duration should at least be 6 weeks full time (7.5 EC) or 10 weeks full time (15 EC)
  • the host organization should have a reasonable size
  • you should be able to work at an academic level
  • In case of a 15 EC internship, the internship must have a research component

For more in-depth information on the essential requirements, please consult the accompanying course manual.

Trouble finding an internship? Contact the Internship Coordinator. Or check out the U.S.E. Internship Vacancies and more.

Step 2: Initial Approval

For the initial approval you will need to contact the Internship Coordinator at least 4 weeks ahead of the start of your internship. Please fill out the 'Questionnaire - Internship Preparation' and include it in your e-mail.

In some cases, and in any case for non-EU students, a meeting with the study advisor for approval of a proposed internship is necessary.

Step 3: Final Approval and Supervision

  • Sign an internship contract with the host organsiation.
  • Make sure you have a signed  Internship Agreement (pdf) two weeks before the start of the internship. Then contact your internship coordinator to get approval to start your internship.
  • Contact the internship coordinator for an intake on the final approval and supervision.

Step 4: Assessment

  • During your internship you will send bi-weekly updates to your assigned university mentor.
  • Within 6 weeks after you finish your internship, make sure to make an appointment with your internship coordinator for the assessment of your internship. Based on your portfolio, the internship coordinator will decide whether you have fulfilled the requirements for getting 7.5 or 15 ECTS.

Extra-Curricular Internship

It is important to know that if you do the internship without credits, we won’t be able to co-sign any (tripartite) contract. This is because the internship is not part of your educational trajectory at the University and all agreements go between you and the host organisation. Sometimes the organisation wants proof that you are enrolled as a student. You can download a proof of enrolment via Osiris.

Without a tripartite contract non-EU students are only allowed to work/do an internship with a ‘tewerkstellingsvergunning’ (work permit), arranged by the employer. For more information, please check your visa regulations. When in doubt, contact the study advisors.

External Research Bachelor

Under certain circumstances it is possible for students to do external research as part of the Applied Economics Research Course. Always contact the course coordinator of this course first, to discuss the possibilities. For the specific criteria, please check the Course Catalogue

  • Internship Agreement (pdf) (for external research as part of the Applied Economics Research Course)
