Applied Economics Research Course

By September of the academic year, students must have at least 135 EC. Before starting the Applied Economic Research Course, students must have passed 'Econometrics' and two level 3 courses (one of which must be an economics course), as well as the reflection report on academic skills.

By September, students must have at least 90 EC. Before starting the course, students must have passed 'Econometrics' and two level 3 courses (at least one economics course), as well as the reflection report on academic skills. 

The supervisor, in consultation with the co-reader, will complete the assessment form. You can view your assessment form in OSIRIS once finalized. The final grade will consist of the following components:

• Research paper: 80% of the final grade (N.B.: the grade for this component should be at least 5.5 not rounded up, for the student to pass the course);
• Participation and feedback in the project group: 10% of the final grade;
• Presentations: 10% of the final grade).

When conducting research and writing your thesis, you must manage research data, including collecting, processing, storing, and documenting data—especially personal data (e.g., from interviews). If using personal data, comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Ensure your data is properly secured. Familiarize yourself with the relevant legislation and university guidelines before starting your thesis. Your supervisor can provide the necessary guidelines.

U.S.E. offers access to Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS), and Factset. WRDS provides databases like Compustat and tools for SAS, Matlab, Python, and R, as well as a cloud environment with SAS 9.4. For more details and manuals, visit uufinancedata.wordpress.com. Please note that Eikon is no longer available for BSc students.

Students in P4 can, under certain conditions, do external research as part of the Applied Economics Research Course. Proposals are due by 1 February. For the specific criteria, please check the external research proposal guidelines, as well as the guidelines on writing a research plan and the assessment form.
