STUDY ABROAD

Utrecht University has exchange agreements with universities throughout the world. The Faculty of Humanities has agreements on specific subject areas, while university-wide agreements are open to students of all faculties (in general). During an exchange programme, you remain enrolled at Utrecht University and pay tuition fees only to UU.

Under step 2 you will find a list of all partner universities. Depending on which university you choose, you will be supported by the faculty of the university-wide International Office. 

Conditions

If you wish to go abroad as an exchange student, then the following conditions apply:

  • You are enrolled as a fulltime student at Utrecht University, during your exchange period;
  • You must officially introduce the courses you take abroad into your study programme at Utrecht University.

Making a study plan

In order to sign up for an exchange, you must draw up a 'study plan' and have it approved by the programme coordinator of your Master's programme. As soon as you have an indication of which courses you wish to take, you can make an appointment with the programme coordinator and discuss your plans. Oftentimes it is not possible to know exactly which courses you are able to enroll in (the courses offered at the intended partner university can still change). In that case, you can base your study plan on the partner's information that is available at that moment.

Do you want to study abroad in the academic year 2022/2023? The Study Abroad weeks will take place from 4 to 15 October 2021!

During the Study Abroad weeks, the International Offices will give several (online) information sessions and workshops in order to prepare yuo for an exchange at one of our many partner universities worldwide. In these meetings we discuss, among other things, what an exchange is, how to choose a suitable destination, and we explain the application procedure.

The faculty meetings for Humanities students are scheduled as follows:

  • Maandag 4 oktober, 14.30-15.30: Bachelor, in Dutch!
  • Wednesday 6 October, 10.00-11.00: Bachelor, in English!
  • Friday 8 October, 10.00-11.00: in English, Master students only!

For all of our exchange destinations, there is a page with more information regarding that university. Go to the list of exchange destinations. You can use the filter to find the destinations you can go to, so tick 'All UU students' as well as 'Humanities', and leave out the rest.

When orienting to a destination, keep the following entry requirements in mind:

  • Did you pay attention to the right level (Bachelor/Master)?
  • Is the destination open to students with your academic background (see 'Areas of study open to exchange students')?
  • Are there enough courses that you can take with your academic background?
  • Do you meet the language requirements?
  • Please check the website of your study programme (Bachelor or Master) to see if there are any specific conditions.
  • A general condition is that you must have completed at least 60 ECTS of your Bachelor programme. Most programmes allow students to study abroad in the third year of their Bachelor.
  • In a one-year Master's programme, it is not possible to study abroad without incurring any delay.
