Complaints in general
If you disagree with the way in which the UU has behaved towards you, you can lodge a complaint with the Humanities Complaints Coordinator.
Inappropriate behaviour
Have you been the victim of inappropriate behaviour? Or did you see someone else being victimized? Do not hesitate to speak up. For instance, you can talk to your tutor, lecturer or Study Advisor. And you can also turn to the faculty of Humanities' contact for inappropriate behaviour, Stefan Vuurens. He will be able to advise you and help you take the next step if necessary.
If you prefer, you can also contact: Biene Meijerman, who is our staff contact for inappropriate behaviour. In the event of absence and during holidays, Stefan Vuurens and Biene Meijerman will act for each other.
Confidential Counsellor for inappropriate behaviour
If you would like to speak directly to the UU confidential advisor, you are of course welcome to do so! Send an email to vertrouwenspersonen-ongewenstgedrag@uu.nl or check the website of Utrecht University's Confidential Counsellor for Inappropriate Behaviour.
Do not hesitate to take action
If you experience sexual or verbal harassment, discrimination, aggression, violence or bullying, don't spend too much time dealing with it! You can talk about it with a tutor, lecturer or study advisor. Would you rather talk to someone else? Then contact Stefan Vuurens, our faculty's contact for inappropriate behaviour. He will be able to help you no matter what.
Inappropriate behaviour beyond our university
If you have had to deal with inappropriate behaviour beyond UU, but you encounter the person(s) involved at UU, feel free to report this via Contactpersoon-ongewenstgedragStudenten.gw@uu.nl.
What happens after you contact us?
- You will receive an invitation for an appointment as soon as possible. That appointment will take place at a discreet location or online via teams, whichever you prefer. We will offer a sympathetic ear, advise you and explain possible follow-up steps.
- Together you decide what to do next. Your call will be registered anonymously.
- Annually, the confidential counsellors publish an anonymous report about the number of reports and their nature. The data cannot be traced back to individuals. The faculty board uses the information from the report for policy to prevent undesirable behaviour.

PPE Diversity Council
In September 2023, the PPE board established the Diversity Council (DC), an independent advisory body primarily aimed at community building and the promotion of equality and inclusion within our shared learning environment. This year we have Chiara Fachin (YR3) and Leonie Lenz (YR1) as student members and Stefanie Beyens and Yousra Rahmouni Elidrissi as staff members. If you have concerns or great ideas for events, please, get in touch: dc.ppe@uu.nl
As a diverse community, we must acknowledge our differences -in gender, race, ability, economic socio-cultural background, along many other aspects of our identity- not as ways of separating us but rather as bridges that can enrich us collectively and allow us to grow individually. For that, we must understand how these differences shape our experiences, beliefs, political positions, the opportunities we have access to as well as the challenges we face in everyday life.
Our goal is to foster collective conversations about what it means to be(come) a community, as well as to reflect and develop responses to diversity-related tensions and frictions that might be experienced by students, teachers, and staff. In that sense, we envision ourselves functioning as a forum where we can meet, talk and even disagree. Also, we will work on gathering resources relevant to these questions and develop a network of people and organizations who have expertise and experience in this field.
How do you make sense of your differences in the PPE community? How do they shape your interactions and conversations with others? How can we all facilitate the cultivation of knowledge and practices that make our community more inclusive?
Events
There has been a lot of talk recently about social safety at the university. That is because the nature of transgressive behaviors that undermine feelings of safety are multiple and run deep in the academic culture. From everyday sexism to racism and (sexual) harassment, the education system can feel unsafe for women, members of LGBTQA community, people of color and other minorities. These experiences largely remain out of sight, not spoken about beyond one's familiar or intimate circle. Yet, we have so much to learn from listening to these experiences and understanding the dynamics of exclusion underlying them.
To strengthen our PPE community and building on the desire to create open and safe spaces for dialogue on diversity issues, we invite you to a conversation circle to share experiences of unsafety in and around the university.
Join us if you think it matters to engage with such issues in the community, if you want to support efforts to increase understanding among each other, to dispel ignorance or indifference towards what others are experiencing, to listen but also to let go of the fear of saying the 'wrong' or 'difficult to say' thing.
Dear YR 3 students: To celebrate your return, the newly created Diversity Council is inviting you to a little get together to reconnect as a community. Ahead of it, we’d like to collect some pictures, thoughts & impressions of your experiences away from PPE. How did you experience joining a new (academic, professional and/or cultural) environment? We created a very short form for you to upload some pictures and answer a few questions, that we want to use as a basis for a slideshow to share on the day we meet. We’re very grateful that FoodCo has agreed to feed us during this event. So come, have a chat, have a bite, and reconnect.
How can we make sure everyone at PPE feels included in a socially safe way? And about how do we react when people are not? We know the devasting effects incidents can have, both on an individual and on a community level. This workshop helps build a resilient community. We will discuss a vignette of a fictional incident (an amalgamation of real-life stories that happened in the past at PPE) and try to find a way to move on from unpleasant interactions.
